Carboniferous Limestone outcrops over about half of the surface of Ireland and in all but one of the 32 counties.

It is not surprising to find that Ireland has a large number of karst areas and a considerable number of caves.
There are wide variations in limestone types across the country and this has had a profound effect on the types of cave found in the various regions.

Each of the main caving regions is briefly described, giving details of the types of cave, suitable guidebooks and other information.

Accommodation and locations where cavers can be found are also mentioned.
